There are situations where getting to the hospital is simply not practical. An elderly parent recovering from surgery. A patient with limited mobility due to a chronic condition. A new mother who needs follow-up care but cannot easily travel with a newborn. In these cases, home-based care brings the hospital to you.
Medilife Hospital's Home Based Care program extends our clinical capabilities beyond our walls, providing professional healthcare services in the patient's own home. Our trained home care nurses work under the supervision of the patient's attending physician to deliver care that is coordinated, documented, and held to the same standards as in-hospital treatment.
Services We Provide at Home
Nursing visits: Our nurses can perform wound dressing and care, medication administration (including injections), vital sign monitoring (blood pressure, blood sugar, temperature), catheter care, and post-surgical recovery support. Each visit follows a care plan developed by the patient's physician.
Teleconsultation: For patients who need medical advice but do not require a physical examination, our doctors are available for teleconsultation. This is particularly useful for medication reviews, follow-up discussions after test results, and general medical queries.
Medicine delivery: If you need a prescription refilled and cannot visit the hospital, our pharmacy team can arrange delivery of your medications. This service ensures continuity of treatment without the need for a hospital visit.
Home sample collection: Laboratory tests are a routine part of managing chronic conditions. Our phlebotomists can visit your home to collect blood, urine, or other specimens, which are then transported to our laboratory for analysis. Results are shared with your physician and communicated to you.
Who Benefits from Home Based Care
Post-surgical patients: Recovery after surgery often involves wound care, medication management, and monitoring for complications. Home nursing visits reduce the need for repeated hospital trips during the healing period.
Elderly patients: Older adults with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease benefit from regular monitoring without the physical strain of hospital visits.
Patients with mobility challenges: Those who use wheelchairs, have difficulty walking, or cannot easily access transportation rely on home care to maintain their treatment plans.
Chronic disease management: Patients on long-term treatment for conditions like kidney disease, cancer, or HIV/AIDS may need regular blood tests and medication adjustments that can be managed partly through home visits.
New mothers and newborns: Postnatal check-ins, breastfeeding support, and newborn assessments can be conducted at home, reducing the stress of traveling with a new baby.
How to Arrange Home Based Care
Contact Medilife Hospital at +254 703 494 444 to discuss your home care needs. Our team will assess the type and frequency of care required, assign a home care nurse, and develop a care plan in coordination with the patient's physician. Services are available in Ruiru and surrounding areas including Juja, Kahawa, Githurai, and parts of Thika and Kiambu.
What to Expect During a Home Visit
Our nurse will arrive at the scheduled time with all necessary supplies and equipment. They will introduce themselves, review the care plan, and perform the required services. After each visit, notes are documented and shared with the supervising physician. If the nurse identifies any concerning changes in the patient's condition, they will communicate with the doctor immediately and recommend whether a hospital visit is needed.
Cost and Insurance
Home-based care services are billed based on the type and frequency of visits. Some insurance providers cover home nursing services; check with your insurer. We accept cash, M-Pesa, and bank payments.
